Canada's Dining Habits are Changing as Cost of Living Rises

Although Canada’s inflation rate eased to 7% from 7.6% as gas prices dipped, food costs remained elevated. In light of this, we looked into the implications this has on the way Canadians are spending their money on food. In a recent survey of 1,622 Canadian adults, we found that Canada’s food shopping and dining habits are rapidly changing in line with the cost of living crisis.

Dining Out

Dining Out

Financial strains on the Canadian public revealed major changes in their relationship with food and dining out. The survey revealed that almost two thirds (62%) of Canadians are eating out less due food price increases and almost almost half (46%) of Canadians are switching to cheaper food brands to save money on their weekly grocery bill.

Here at Chefs Plate, we found the survey findings saddening, seeing the vast majority of Canadians finding the need to change their food shopping habits due to the financial crisis we are facing. Eating out and enjoying our favourite foods with our friends and family is part of what makes us human; it’s a great way to catch up with loved ones and try different cuisines.

Luckily, when you subscribe to a recipe box subscription like Chefs Plate, you can get that ‘restaurant’ experience from the comfort of your own home, all at a fraction of the cost and never compromising on quality. Plus, unlike dining out, all recipe boxes come pre-portioned, meaning there’s no waste.

Apart from eating out less and buying from cheaper food brands, the survey also highlighted that the cost of living is also having an impact on what types of foods people are buying, with over a third of those surveyed (35%) admitting to cutting back on their meat intake, and over a fifth (21%) cutting back on their fresh fruit and vegetables to save money too. Sadly, almost one in 20 (4%) of those surveyed added that they’d had to rely on food banks for their groceries.

The survey found that only a small portion of the Canadian public said that their food-buying habits had not changed at all, highlighting a huge majority (81%) were responding to the cost of living crisis by changing their food-buying habits. Having to prioritise things other than our diets can be detrimental to our health and general well-being, which is why we want to make tasty, high quality and affordable food available to all.
